Tim Hudak, leader of Ontario’s opposition Progressive Conservatives, released a policy white paper this week, outlining his party’s extremist plans for the province if his useless party ever manages to slide its hands into the political cookie jar again.
His two main brain farts are to privatize casinos and other types of gambling, and to privatize the government-owned liquor stores. What a fucking idiot! The angle that Tim “the dim” has been playing is that they are expenses, and take scarce government resources away from services like health care and education. The brutal truth is that being in charge of gambling and booze is like having a licence to print money. Casinos and liquor stores help PAY for necessary services like healthcare and education! Without those two sources of revenue, taxes would have to massively increase, or services would have to be cut to the bone like in a third world country.
One of Hudak’s bullshit lines is that the government shouldn’t be in the business of buying roulette wheels and hiring cocktail waitresses. Those who disapprove of gambling altogether would agree, as long as gambling was outlawed, not handed over to private sector vultures, many of whom have ties to organized crime. Roulette wheels probably pay for themselves within the first few minutes of being in operation!
Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino owner, donated almost $150 million to Republican Party candidates in the 2012 United States election, and plans to donate millions more to the Republicans. His personal wealth is estimated at $20.5 billion. This is the kind of cash we’re talking about when it comes to private casinos. Why the flipping hell would anyone want to let go of that kind of cash cow so some rich powerful fuck can get even richer and more powerful? It makes no fucking sense at all!
Another part of Hudak’s moronic policy plan is to fire thousands of public sector workers, regardless of whether they are needed. This is his idea of job creation: throw people out of work and hope that the private sector will magically create jobs just for the hell of it. It’s kind of like how Mitt Romney pretended that corporations would immediately start showering millions of good-paying jobs onto unemployed Americans if Romney was elected – just because! He had no evidence whatsoever to back up his hunch; just blind faith.
Hudak is one of those shitheads who wants to totally destroy the public sector, disband all unions and privatize everything in all situations, regardless of whether it makes any sense. This is despite the undeniable fact that he personally benefitted from being raised by a family of union members and public school educators, and from having free access to public healthcare since birth. When he was attending university, Hudak worked summers at the Canadian Border Services Agency, which is a branch of the federal government. Now he wants to deny others similar opportunities. What a hypocritical piece of human garbage!
After Hudak graduated and was no longer eligible for government student jobs, he was handed a job at a duty-free shop. He whined that this was beneath him, and blamed his economic situation on the Bob Rae NDP government of the time — totally disregarding the fact that there was a recession happening back then (sound familiar?), and the reality that the free trade policies kickstarted by the federal Progressive Conservatives had already started having negative effects on job opportunities for Canadians, young and old.
Hudak should have been thankful that he at least found a paying job right out of university in the Niagara region, which had became one of the highest unemployment areas in Canada once General Motors started slashing jobs, and the related spin-off jobs starting falling like dominoes. Hudak sounds like one of those stereotypical entitled young privileged brats that knee-jerk conservatives love to bitch about! After his duty-free shop job, Hudak worked for the Fort Erie Economic Development Corporation, another government agency!
This is the problem with giving influence to Ayn Rand-worshipping Paul Ryan-style ideological purists whose ideas are all based on theoretical bullshit instead of what has been proven to work in real life.
Hopefully Hudak never gets his slimy hands on the reins of the Ontario government. The McGuinty Liberals are already economically right-wing, anti-worker, corrupt and incompetent enough. We don’t need to make things even worse for the people of this province.
